Rick & Morty S5

So, Nimbus. Goddamned Sub-Mariner wrecking homes and, uh, having his own solution to surface cops. So, are cops fish in this? Fish was a cop, so why not… Casual reference to “destroying mermaid puss” from the Ricklantis Mixup episode, which has never made sense since human-top mermaids don’t have… anyway.

But what I want to point at is the two visual uses of The Fountain, and Jessica’s journey there.

The Fountain is Aronofsky’s only great-film-but-badly-edited. Pi and Requiem for a Dream are perfect as they are (tho I’ll never watch Requiem again, fuck you, man). But all his other films are kinda trashy. The Fountain should be his best work, but jumping back and forth in time wrecks the message, halfway thru you know where it’s all going, just have to wait it out.

If The Fountain was edited correctly, say 3/4 of each story in linear order, and then a coda for each in the same order, with the future part LAST, you might actually follow the character’s enlightenment. As it is, I just get drunk and yell at the screen. And that’s about how Jessica’s enlightenment goes.

Morty’s enemy culture in this is a good development. Like every D&D party picks a fight with some stupid NPCs, and ends up razing their village and getting enemies for life (I know it’s not just me, the Knights of the Dinner Table do it all the time… which is maybe a bad sign). The progression from a family of barbarian idiots who don’t understand the consequences of a magic door, to medieval civilization built around hating Morty, to increasingly technical and apocalyptic focus on the one horrible thing that keeps happening to them. I want these to keep showing up, tho that’s the kind of continuity they don’t really do.

It’s been a long damned time since S4.

Cartoons

BoJack Horseman is a deep, well-written work about self-sabotage and depression. It might be the best show ever made for getting people into some kind of therapy or self-improvement; or at least to stop downing a fifth of Jack every day. But it’s miserable, incredibly unpleasant to watch sometimes, and I’ll almost certainly never rewatch it, with the exception of a few non-depressing episodes (“Fish Out of Water”, for instance).

Rick & Morty is exactly what I want from a cartoon: A bunch of science and fart jokes with parodies of Doc Brown & Marty McFly, with an unhealthy dose of cosmic nihilism, and I can watch it anytime I need a laugh or cry at the futility of life. “Nobody belongs anywhere, nobody exists on purpose, everybody’s going to die. Come watch TV?”

The Simpsons hasn’t been funny past season 2 other than some Treehouse eps and guest-artist couch gags, and the characters are the blandest stereotypes possible. It’s extruded cartoon product. I have no subscription that would let me watch it, and I don’t care, but I do see clips and even complete episodes sometimes on the Youtubes or such. It’s Seinfeld without the observational “humor” or asshole New Yorkers, it’s every awful sitcom with a whiny family, just flavorless pablum. It’ll probably outlive us all. The Terminators will sit around after exterminating Humanity and watch their new Simpsons episodes, chuckle robotically, and complain that earlier seasons were better.

Groening’s (well, to the extent he’s involved; producer & they imitate his old style?) medieval fantasy cartoon Disenchantment is equally dire, which is ridiculous since they’ve taken a genre where there’s unlimited possibilities, and made it into a Simpsons style sitcom. I’m dis-enchanted.

Archer, man, I miss Archer. Seasons 1-4 were fun but standard Adult Swim-type nonsense. Season 5 Archer Vice was the peak, with the coke smuggling, Smokey & the Bandit, Pam’s habit. Season 6 was dull, trying to recapture 1-4 but you can’t go backwards. Season 7 Hollywood was great, film noir done by lunatics; it reminds me excessively of every time I’ve run or played in a modern/espionage RPG. I’ve only seen the first eps of S8-10 in this “dreamland” saga where Sterling’s in a coma fantasizing, and they sure didn’t persuade me to find some way to watch it. S11’s supposed to be back to “reality”? Dunno.

Is there anything good I’m missing?

What I’m Watching: Happy Valley, Message from the King, Rick & Morty

  • Happy Valley: 2 seasons (and a 3rd is planned) of a middle-aged English policewoman chasing murderers in a small town. I find Flock of Seagulls, the first season junior antagonist, utterly unthreatening, but he has his moments. The 2nd season arc was a little obvious, Moaning Myrtle was sinister as hell but with minimal payoff. Still, it’s as good a police procedural/mystery as I’ve seen in ages. ★★★★☆

  • Message from the King: South African badass Jacob King comes to L.A. looking for his missing sister. The plot’s a little opaque at times, Jacob is a mute statue except for some side-eye, and there are far fewer guns and security systems than I’d expect in L.A. underworld, but the fistfights and stealth missions are good. It’s very reminiscent of The Limey, but much grubbier and less fun. ★★★☆☆

  • Rick & Morty S3: Holy shit. Pickle Rick with Danny Trejo. How many times can I spam the star button? ★★★★★★★★★★ I do want at least one of the dumbass improv cable show eps this season, we can’t take a constant dose of this like that Statham flick Crank.

  • Almost no anime. Last year’s Crunchyroll simulcasts had Gabriel Dropout (seriously Gabe is my spirit animal: A dropout who wants to destroy humanity), Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (this might be a tech blog? She’s a Python programmer! She’s writing Django all day in a soul-crushing open-plan office without even a cubicle!), Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor (awesome title, sometimes great characters & plots, endless filler crap in between), some Sakura Quest (cute start, and hooray, more shows about adults with jobs! But this was too mellow and sappy). Everything else this season seems to be a ripoff of Sword Art Online without the cranky MMO-soloing protagonist in black (ahem), or rom-com. Get your shit together, Japan, you’re being out-weirded by a Marty McFly & Doc Pickle cartoon. ★☆☆☆☆
